The UU Church of Tampa sponsors the Tampa Bay RESULTS chapter. Members of the chapter include UUCT members and grass roots activists from the local community.
Our mission is to create the public and political will to end poverty by empowering individuals to exercise their personal and political power for change. We combine the voices of our passionate grassroots activists with strategic grass-tops efforts to leverage millions of dollars for programs and improved policies that give low-income people the health, education, and opportunity they need to thrive.
Our activities include educating ourselves on an aspect of poverty that is relevant to current non-partisan issues that need congressional funding, and then acting to secure the public and political support required to cause change . The RESULTS web site provides information and inspiration.
2013 – 2014 projects include:
• Global Health – Secure a three-year pledge of $5 billion for the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB, & Malaria; Maternal & Child Health programs; Nutrition for Growth; increase funding for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI)
• Education for All –Secure increased funding pledge to the Global Partnership for Education
• Economic Opportunity – Enhance oversight of USAID programs; microfinance assistance to the very poor; promote gender equality and empower women
We promote these issues through: writing Op-Ed pieces and letters to the editors of our local newspapers; meeting with the editorial staffs to educate them on global poverty issues before congress and request them to write an editorial to build public and political interest; lobbying our local congresspersons through letters, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings with them and their legislative staffs to have them sponsor and vote for poverty-related bills.
