
In 1930, The American Unitarian Association sent Rev. Thomas Turrell to establish a Unitarian Church in Tampa. Followed by Rev. Wiliam S. Nichols in 1931 and Rev. Carlyle Summersbell served 1932-33. This congregation disappeared by 1934.
In 1955, a Unitarian Fellowship evolved out of a Great Books discussion group which met in Ybor City that was served by lay leaders until Richard Woodman became minister in 1963 and served until 1968.
Rev. Adrian Melott served as minister of our church from 1971 through 1978. In 1973, the congregation moved the the property where we are today and the original geodesic dome was built.
Rev. Mike Young was called in 1982, beginning a 13¬year ministry here. Rev Mike Young contributed to much of our growth, stability and the building of our current sanctuary occurred during his service. ln April 1995, Rev. Young announced that he had accepted a call from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Honolulu, Hawaii.
James McKinley served as interim minister through August 1997.
Rev. Barbara Child was called in 1997 and began her ministry in September of that year. ln April 2001, Rev. Child announced her resignation, effective August 31, to pursue interim ministry.
ln September 2001, Rev. Charlotte J. Saleska became our lnterim Minister. Unfortunately, due to health issues, she was replaced by Rev. Clyde Grubbs who served through August 2003
After an intensive 14-month search Rev. Marjorie Bowens-Wheatley joined us in September 2003. She was indeed a star and brought many ‘firsts’ to our congregation. After three years, she resigned. This was both a difficult and enriching time in our congregation struggling to support Marjorie with her terminal illness and at the same time moving forward with our church in search for a new minister.
Rev. Elizabeth Brown was serving the nearby St. Petersburg church and came across the bay to serve as our Interim minister. She completed her service in 2007.
In September 2007, Rev. Sara Zimmerman joined us as a called minister and brought with her a much needed period of calm stability. It was during this timeframe that our congregation completed our new facility that we refer to as our Mulitipurpose Religious Education building. Rev. Dr. Sara Zimmerman was awarded a grant for UUA Funding and completed the curriculum “Spirituality, Science and Healing” in 2012-2013.
Rev. Doak Mansfield began a two-year term as our interim minister on September 1, 2013.
