Guest Speaker – Bill Payton
“A Code to Live By”
The Seven Principles has served as a code for almost four decades now; we Unitarians Universalists have rallied around this code and we have accomplished amazing things, but today’s world grows more complex by the day. Let us explore whether this code, our internal GPS system, needs an update.

Bill Payton is a member of the Unitarian Universalists of Sarasota. Bill grew up in Akron, Ohio, served four years in the Marine Corps and returned home to attend the University of Akron where he graduated with a degree in Banking and Finance. He spent forty years in the insurance industry in a career that took him to seven different cities and states. He retired from the University of Missouri in January of 2007 where he served as the Director of Risk & Insurance Management. While in that capacity he was honored in 2006 as Distinguished Risk Manager of the Year by the University Risk Management and Insurance Association. While attending a high school reunion in Akron he became reacquainted with a high school classmate, Mary Fran Raynault. Mary Fran was raised Universalist and, at that time, was President of her UU congregation in Paramus, NJ, thus Bill’s introduction to UUism.  Bill and Mary Fran are now life companions and moved to Sarasota in December of 2010. He became both a UU and a member of Unitarian Church of Sarasota in January of 2011 and has been active on several committees. He is currently the President of the Board of Trustees. He has three children, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, plays tennis, golf and bridge and loves attending Sunday services with the Unitarian Universalists of Sarasota.

“Mother’s Day – Building a Home”
It is challenging to be a MOM or a DAD. But what a privilege and what a responsibility. Everyone needs a home where they are taught principles and values that will last a lifetime. Everyone needs a home where they learn a healthy sense of their own identity. Everyone needs to know that they can always go back home.

Flower Ceremony – Bring a flower to share.

“Building a Life”
Where do you begin to build your life? You begin where every builder begins – with the foundation – with the cornerstone. No building is any stronger or surer than its foundation. How do you build a successful life? You build it on the rock with a sure cornerstone. You invest in the solid structure with the best materials for the day you will be glad you did.

Memorial Sunday – “Building a World”
At times, our world can be viewed as a cold and uncaring world. But it is not a hopeless world. Despite all the negatives something positive is happening to our world. It is about sharing a message with hurting people who desperately need to know they are loved and valued. It is feeling the pain of innocent victims and saying to these people, “I wish to share with you in your suffering.”

.

On the last Sunday of the month, following this service after coffee time: Conversations with The Board. Members of the Board of Trustees will be present for conversation after church today from 11:45 to 12 p.m. The purpose is to open communication and share ideas. Come with questions and ideas but always with an open mind.
