Thomas Turrell,\u00a0 worked to maintain a Unitarian congregation in Tampa.\u00a0 Several local Unitarians were known as outspoken radicals of the time, and the congregation did not remain active for long.\u00a0 An example that has been passed along states that in January, 1934, the minister, Rev.\u00a0 Carlyle Summerhill reported 67 in the morning service and 35 at the evening forum.\u00a0 The meeting place was a store across the river opposite the University of Tampa which they shared during the week with a spiritualist for seances and with a psychologist &#8211; this was a source of contention among some members.\u00a0 Rev. Summerhill stated, &#8220;I do not know what is coming.\u00a0 I am taking very critical grounds on the lynching by shooting of a Negro accused but not proved guilty of assault.\u00a0 The lack of competent religious leadership in pulpit and daily news made this seem inevitable.&#8221;\u00a0 No record has been found of when this congregation was dissolved.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1170\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1170\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Concordia_72a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1170 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Concordia_72a-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"UU_Concordia_72a\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Concordia_72a-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Concordia_72a.jpg 802w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Concordia Street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Unitarian Fellowship of Tampa was organized in 1954 and evolved out of an interracial Great Books discussion group which met in Ybor City. The Fellowship was a unique interracial community led by a series of lay leaders and part-time ministers and held services near downtown Tampa.\u00a0 By 1955, the group was meeting regularly at the Tampa Federated Women&#8217;s Club at 809 Horatio Street.\u00a0 Reportedly the group moved to an empty downtown Tampa Electric Company building when the Women&#8217;s Club learned the Fellowship was interracial.\u00a0\u00a0 When TECO announced plans to tear the building down, the Fellowship moved to 2904 Concordia Street.\u00a0 During this time, the building was also rented to Metropolitan Community Church, a gay Christian group, and we sold the building to them when we moved.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1168\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_model_73.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1168\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_model_73-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"The Dome model in 1973\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_model_73-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_model_73.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Dome model in 1973<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ln 1973, the congregation purchased five acres of land on the northeast edge of Tampa on Morris Bridge Road and built a 48\u2032 geodesic dome in the late 1970s.\u00a0\u00a0 The church was designed by Jim Joiner, a UU from Orlando. He was willing to build it, but the Board chose to hire a contractor.<\/p>\n<p>The skylight was built by Dean James. The church entered into a cooperative arrangement with a small private school, the Tryon School, which purchased the adjoining five acres of property at the same time. We used their classrooms on Sundays, while the school used our building for weekday meetings. This arrangement lasted for several years, but eventually the school closed and their buildings fell into disrepair.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1169\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_skylight_74.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1169 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_skylight_74-e1412378658275-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"The small dome skylight\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_skylight_74-e1412378658275-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/UU_Dome1_skylight_74-e1412378658275.jpg 719w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The small dome skylight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1980, the fellowship incorporated as the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa.\u00a0 Also, in 1980, the Florida Department of Transportation began to build l-75 adjacent to our property. After a lawsuit, the D.O.T. paid our newly incorporated Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa over $70,000 for half of our quiet, wooded property. With the D.O.T. money in the bank, the church decided to call a permanent minister, using that account to make up any shortfall until growing membership and pledges would increase the financial base of the church.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-475\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/uu-church-tampa-boost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-475 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/uu-church-tampa-boost-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"Our santuaru\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/uu-church-tampa-boost-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/uu-church-tampa-boost.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our sanctuary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rev. Mike Young was called in 1982, beginning a 13\u00acyear ministry here. His total compensation that first year was $17,000.\u00a0 We decided to build a second, larger, dome-roofed building of about 5600 square feet with a large sanctuary, office space, one classroom, and room to expand in the balcony. The church broke ground for the new dome in 1987 and, after many problems and delays, celebrated its completion, and dedicated it in 1989 thanks to the building committee\u2019s persistent attention to the project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-495\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ACHurch-grounds-June-2014-245.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-495 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ACHurch-grounds-June-2014-245-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"The gargoyle watches the herb garden\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ACHurch-grounds-June-2014-245-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ACHurch-grounds-June-2014-245.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The gargoyle watches the herb garden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Full Moon Circle formed in 1992 has produced and tended an herb garden at the edge of our property.\u00a0 In 2000, Circles in the Woods CUUPS,\u00a0 Covenant of UU Pagans (CUUPS), became a committee of the church and continues to hold Full Moon Celebrations open to the public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/50th-cake.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1202\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/50th-cake.jpg\" alt=\"50th cake\" width=\"275\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a>In 2005, we celebrated the 50th anniversary with various activities throughout the year, including a service and presentation by then-UUA president, Rev. William Sinkford.\u00a0 Click <a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/videos\/UUCTs_Story.mov%20\">here<\/a> to see a video made for our 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, our congregation identified the vision of becoming a &#8220;center for liberal religious education for people of all ages&#8221; as a top priority.\u00a0 It became increasingly clear that our existing facilities did not provide adequate space for Religious Education classes or for multiple groups to meet simultaneously.\u00a0\u00a0 However, it wasn&#8217;t until May 4, 2008 that the congregation voted to approve a Capital Campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ground_breaking_nov_2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1199 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ground_breaking_nov_2010-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"ground_breaking_nov_2010\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ground_breaking_nov_2010-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ground_breaking_nov_2010-1024x687.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A gala ground-breaking ceremony was held on November 9, 2010 for a new building to assist with meeting space for the adult, children&#8217;s, and youth religious education.\u00a0 We held our building dedication on September 18, 2011.<a href=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mpb2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-919 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mpb2-2-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"mpb2 (2)\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mpb2-2-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uutampa.org\/search2014\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/mpb2-2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s next?\u00a0 Well that was a question in our 2014 congregational survey, so let&#8217;s see where that takes us!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On April 15, 1928, thirty people gathered in Tampa at an organizational meeting\u00a0 of a Unitarian congregation in Tampa.\u00a0 In the 1930s Rev.
