            Accessibility

The Accessibility Committee estimates that at least a third of our church members have a disability, and many of us have more than one, even if we don’t think of ourselves as disabled. Our most prevalent issues involve mobility and hearing loss. Using a cane or wheelchair makes some disabilities obvious.  Others, such as allergies and chemical sensitivities, may be hidden.

We hope everyone will take an interest in this topic because the actions of one person can affect accessibility for another. Also, any of us could develop a problem, either temporary or permanent.

Everyone is encouraged to read the UUA Web pages on accessibility at: http://www.uua.org/leaders/leaderslibrary/accessibility/disability101/index.shtml

Eventually, we hope to build more accessible facilities. In the meantime, we strive to make our church as accessible as we can. Please contact the committee -- Tempie Taudte, Suzie Siegel or Jonathan Roudabush -- if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns. You can email us at access@uutampa.org or leave a message on the church phone at (813) 988-8188. The earlier you contact us, the more likely we can assist you.

Can’t drive? Contact us if you need a ride to church, and we will try to arrange one.

Parking: Our parking area is unpaved. We have only one paved space for people with disabilities. We have another space that is unpaved. If passengers cannot walk far, they can be dropped off at our paved entrance.

If you have no trouble walking, please park farther from the church to free up space for visitors and those who can’t walk as far.

Chairs in the sanctuary: Please put some chairs without arms at the end of aisles for people who need them. (But leave some chairs with arms at the end of aisles for people who need that type of chair.) Leave the last two seats on the aisles for those who need them. This will make it easier for people with disabilities and those who need to get up during the service.

Do you need a wheelchair? We have one available.

People in wheelchairs: Chairs in the sanctuary can be moved to accommodate wheelchairs.

Many rooms are small, but you should be able to enter. Both domes have slight doorsills, and the doors open out. Both doors must be opened to get inside the small dome. Please ask if you need help.

In the big dome, the water fountain is not accessible. Nor is the sink in the women’s restroom. But the kitchen sinks are, and cold drinks can be gotten from the refrigerator.

The balcony is not accessible. People should not schedule meetings there unless they have closed groups and no one has problems with stairs.

Restrooms have stalls with grab bars and enough space for a wheelchair, but they are not big enough for a wheelchair to turn around. If you want, a church member will assist you.

Large print: We have one large-print hymnal available in the office. Please contact us or the office if you would like to reserve it. You also can contact us if you need a large-print Order of Service.

Audio services: Church members can get the UU World magazine on tape at this address: http://www.uua.org/documents/idbm/access_uuworldtape.pdf

Bill Blymiller can broadcast Sunday services on an FM radio channel. People can use earplugs to listen by radio, turning up the sound as loud as they want. A greeter also can direct you to seating for people with hearing impairments.

Flash photography: Some people are sensitive to bright, flickering light and/or flash photography. If you want to take flash photography, please contact the accessibility committee, the convener or the worship leader so that we can make appropriate plans.

Perfume and cologne: Please do not wear perfume or cologne. They can cause problems for people with allergies, asthma, migraines or multiple chemical sensitivities.

Food: Some people have food allergies or dietary requirements. Don’t be concerned if people ask you about the ingredients in a dish you bring to a potluck. If you don’t mind the extra work, you can write down the ingredients in dishes you bring.

Nametags: Please wear them! Some of us don’t have good memories.
